good posture

Regular visits to our Cedar Knolls chiropractor can improve your posture, maintain alignment of your spine, improve your balance, reduce aches and pains, and strengthen your core. In between visits to our chiropractor for chiropractic adjustments, you should maintain proper posture so you don’t experience backsliding or recurring symptoms. These tips can help you maintain good posture:

While Sitting

When seated for long periods of time, particularly at work, you can maintain proper posture by:

  • Not crossing your legs
  • Keeping your feet flat on the ground
  • Using a footrest if your feet can’t reach the ground
  • Using a chair that offers lower back support
  • Arching your back so that there is a small space between your back and the back of the chair
  • Keeping your shoulders back and straight
  • Keeping your head level over your shoulders
  • Keeping your forearms parallel to the ground
  • Getting up and walking around or stretching every hour

While Standing

You also need to maintain proper posture if you’re going to be standing up for long periods of time by:

  • Keeping your feet shoulder-width apart
  • Keeping your knees slightly bent
  • Placing most of your weight on the balls of your feet
  • Letting your arms hang down by your sides
  • Keeping your head in line with your shoulders
  • Shifting your weight occasionally from your toes to your heels, and from one foot to the other

While Lying Down

To maintain proper posture while lying down, you can:

  • Use pillows to mitigate postural problems (at the advice of our chiropractor)
  • Use the right mattress for your preferred sleeping style
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach (unless directed to by your doctor)
  • Use a pillow between your legs to maintain a straight spine when sleeping on your side
  • Place a pillow under your knees to take pressure off your lower back if sleeping on your back
